Zidell Presentation Wed night

"Zidell Community Presentation
Recently, the Zidell family, owners of 33 acres in the South Waterfront, announced plans to develop a $20 million 118-unit apartment building in the South Waterfront. The building will cater to young professionals and employees/students working at OHSU. The seven-story building will be located at the corner of SW Moody and SW Grover (the small dead-end street just north of Gibbs – near the base of the Ross Island Bridge). The mixed-use development will also include retail and restaurant space.
A unique and progressive feature of the development is the building's lack of residential parking; the building will instead feature bicycle parking and adjacent proximity to the Streetcar. Transportation options and transportation demand management will be key not only for this building, but for the district as a whole.

To learn about this project, ask questions, or learn more about future Zidell projects, please attend Zidell’s Open house on Wednesday, May 30 at Umpqua Bank from 5:30 pm - 6:15 pm. Representatives from Zidell will be on hand to talk about the new building and answer questions.

Opening Soon

We are hoping to have all work completed by mid-June so we can open the bridge: crews are currently finalizing the “punch list” items on the bridge and the elevator is nearing completion before a final inspection from the state.

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 23 between 10 am and 2 pm for a Grand Opening that include an opening ceremony, walking tours, and free Tram rides from 9 am - noon.

AHA Heart Walk 2012 photos

The annual Heart Walk took place this Saturday, starting at the Eastbank Esplanade and looping around the 3 mile waterfront loop. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, the event pulled in participants from a bunch of Portland organizations, including OHSU, hospitals and research centers, friends and family.

Turn-out seemed much greater than in previous years. Beautiful weather - Here are some photos from the walk:

This week: "As Nick delves deeper into his life as a Grimm, a trail of grotesque murders reignites the search for the elusive gold coins."

The Grimm Season 1 finale made its way through many familiar locations from throughout the previous 21 episodes. Noticeably missing were the bridges and forest scenes, but last weeks' episode probably made up for that. This episode also featured the lovely Mary Mastrontonio as "the Woman in Black",  who hunts down the bad guys with her Jason Bourne-esque skills.

This might be the best forest footage yet. Also some great local spotlights. No bridges this week.

The show opens with a Blair Witch style video and 2 guys tracking down Bigfoot, somewhere around "Bluff Creek Valley".

Juliette gets called out to "Tom Carson's ranch" to check on a horse that has been attacked. This may have been at or near the Roloff Farm in Hillsboro (near Helvetia Tavern, see below), as their site has been used to stage for Grimm filming.

Brinkerhoff's lecture in a library
The lecture scenes were filmed on location at the Crumpacker Family Library in the Portland Art Museum.  Confirmed here on their Facebook page; (the scene shows up at minute 22:54 for those of you who want to track it down).

Land grab in the South Waterfront?

So there is a lot of news flying these days about land purchases, expansions, Zidell, OHSU, etc. Here is a quick summary of the major headlines:

1. OHSU did buy some new land (Blocks 23 & 27), including what is currently the dahlia fields & dog park. They say that we can continue to use it for dahlias and dogs for the foreseeable future. Construction of the future OHSU patient buildings will be awhile (no immediate plans).

2. Zidell is developing more land. They just announced a proposed apartment building under the RI Bridge. They also recently purchased the 3030 Building (office building @ 3030 Moody Ave).

3. RiverPlace is not South Waterfront, even if the DJC insists on calling it so. Developers are looking at putting a new Hyatt in at RiverPlace.

And all of it leads the Portland Business Journal to ask "Is South Waterfront coming back?" This makes me wonder, where do they think it/we went???

Another item for discussion - the word on the street is NO MORE LITTLE BIG BURGER for the South Waterfront. This is just a rumor so far, but I have not seen a bit of action at the location in the Ardea, which was supposed to open in June. Highly unlikely from the looks of things.

The LBB website lists Eugene & SE Portland, but doesn't list other new expansion locations (which it did previously).

Update 5/18 - This just in from South Waterfront Community Relations on Facebook:
"Just wanted to let everyone know that Little Big Burger is coming to the South Waterfront. They will probably begin build out July 1st - so we will have to wait a little longer, but the burgers will be here!"

I would read "begin build out July 1" to mean an opening in the Fall. But hey, we are happy that they are still planning to open here!

A new bridge makes an appearance this week: the Oregon City / Gladstone Bridge --- (along with a clever plotline about the creature "mob" and their troll-mobster-ing of the Portland bridges.)

Mannheim, Germany bar scenes:  The Lotus Cafe doubled as a German bar in a few scenes, most memorably the final scene where a Reaper receives and opens up a package with 2 severed heads in it.

The California Literature Review published an article by David Loftus (the actor who played the Reaper) about his experience on Grimm. A little trivia from his article: "I noticed that set dressers had placed pictures of Mad Ludwig’s lovely Neuschwanstein castle... and other German scenes inside the picture frames on the wall, but none of those turned out to be visible on camera."

Meeting of the Beaver Society
The Beaver Society meeting took place at Bull Run Powerhouse (thanks Jeff!) The "lodge" scenes were filmed in the former Transformer Building, and the fight and beheading took place in Turbine Hall (see comment below). It sounds like we may see this very cool location again in future filming.

If you look into this a bit, you will also run across Roslyn Lake, another historical site that was used in the Pilot episode of Grimm.

"Portland Planning Commission" (the trolls') office
Nice bridge view out the window because they are literally under a bridge -- this is a cool location choice. It goes with the Trolls/Mob story line, and extortion under the bridges.  Love the photos of bridges on every wall, nice touch. According to my sources, the scenes were filmed here, in the building facing the Jefferson St Bridge:

Trip Trap Social Club
The mobster trolls met up here, in the cardroom at Lotus Cardroom & Cafe at SW 3rd & Salmon. The street entrance shown in the final scene was on Salmon.
