Grimm Ep302 "PTZD" Portland filming locations

Grimm Ep 302: PTZD

"While the gang tries to stop Zombie Nick's ruthless rampage and Renard exacts his revenge on Eric, Adalind works to restore her Hexenbiest powers."
Aired: Nov 1, 2013 - 9/8C

Zombie Nick is on the loose in farm country near Troutdale. The gang chases after him with a brief stop at Tippy's by the Captain and ladies; meanwhile Nick's buddies Monroe and Hank track him down at the farmhouse.

The farmhouse is hypothetically located at 642 Birmingham Rd. (There is one location in Vancouver, though not this farmhouse.) Did any of you run across this site during filming?

Barn fighting ensues, the gang subdues Nick and absconds to the Spice Shop.

Familiar locales:

Police Parking Garage:

Back to the yellow and white Montgomery Park parking garage, as in earlier seasons. It was first seen in Ep 13.

This is a brief post this week. I'm certain we will see much more of Portland in the coming weeks.

Grimm Season 3 Premiere

Welcome back Grimm!

Grimm Season 3 premiered on Friday with "The Ungrateful Dead". The series picked up where they left us dangling last season with lots of zombies in the container yard. Just another night here in Portland!

Chasing, fighting zombies.

Hank is back on two feet again. Did Juliette tell Hank on the phone: "I'm with Monrosalee..."?

Nick (now a zombie too) was kidnapped by the baron who tried to fly him to Europe.

The gang's all here at our beloved PDX.

Frau Pech lost her heart...hands...feet...and eyeballs to the charming Adalind and the gypsies. Gore. Magical poppy fields.
Poppies - nbc.com/grimm
Claire Coffee mentioned that the poppy field scenes were filmed on a disc golf course in the area. Perhaps Dabney Disc Golf Course near Troutdale?

Plane crash.

Nick escaped the wreckage and headed to Tippy's Canoe in Troutdale to cause a ruckus.
See photo and story at: http://www.oregonlive.com/movies/index.ssf/2013/10/grimm_season_3.html

The Grimm Gang gassed the zombies inside a container with one of Rosalee's antidotes, turning them back into regular people.

Outside of Tippy's scene & PDX, there was not a lot in the location department, but there promises to be much more coming soon!

Nick is still a zombie on the loose, and with hypersensitive hearing powers.

Portlandia in the South Waterfront

Welcome back, Fred and Carrie!

Portlandia filmed in the area a few weeks back, with scenes shot around the Matisse and in the park.

Yesterday the crew returned, for a very full day of filming. They shot scenes at the Atwater, in the park at our favorite fountain, and in the corridor between the John Ross and the Mirabella.

Mazda Commercial

Last weekend we had a visit from the crew filming some new Mazda commercials. Here are some shots from the filming around our neighborhood on Saturday.

Setup and crew:

The models:  SUV, crossover and hatchback

Proposed Grimm locations (season 2)

What locations would you like to see on Grimm this season?

I suspect many locals who watch Grimm have a few locations in mind which they think would be perfect for the show. Actually, it's not really a suspicion... I have heard from several of you already regarding some favorite spots.

My vote goes to Sellwood Park - wouldn't it make a great setting for an episode?

Leverage filming Friday 6/15

TNT's Leverage is returning to the neighborhood tomorrow, Friday 6/15. Filming is to take place on SW River Parkway starting at 7am...another ferrari scene maybe?! The street will be under traffic control and parking limited from 7am-7pm.

Leverage filming notice - 6/15/12
One year ago, Leverage filmed here for the first time, using the Mirabella and SW River Parkway for scenes. My post on June 6, 2011 documented the events.

Grimm Episode 15 Portland filming locations

Grimm Episode 15: "Island of Dreams"
Summary: "When the Wesen spice shop is robbed, Nick discovers that the criminals may have been after a rare and dangerous drug."
Aired: Friday, March 30

New Locations: Featuring Portland's Central Eastside Industrial District

Opening scene:
Episode 15 opens at the Portland Art Museum. Have any of you die-hard fans out there identified the painting of the woman yet?
'La Bella' on nbc.com/grimm

Many thanks to a reader for identifying the painting! (See comments below.) The painting 'La Bella (Woman in a Blue Dress)' was part of the Titian exhibit, which ran at the Portland Art Museum for several months this winter. This OregonLive article provides some good background.

Scene of the Crime:
You will recognize this episode's scene of the crime as the same Spice Shop from Episode 10 ("Organ Grinder"). These were filmed at the historic Rich Hotel building at 205 Couch.

Home Sweet Home:
We get a little glimpse inside 3 of the characters' homes this week (mainly interior shots).
1. Adalind's Kitchen - where she hexes up a batch of cookies for Hank.

Grimm Episode 12 Portland filming locations

Grimm Episode 12: "Last Grimm Standing"

'A murder leads Nick and Hank to an underground fight club.' Make that fight club / hunger games.

Awhile back, I heard about the Beaverton PAL boxing team involved in filming for Grimm. It looks like this is the episode.

What is the first rule of Grimm Fight Club?

Another Forest Murder
Per usual, our opening scene involves a murder, and this time it's a double homicide of a couple at their cabin in the woods.

The Portland Business Journal (of all things) published a story today about the local actor, Allen Nause, who plays the character killed in this scene. Nause offers a few details about the scene: "Nause shot the scene about two months ago in an old growth forest off Highway 26 about 45 minutes outside of Portland."

We get our usual Police Station shots, Nick's house, as well as a visit to Aunt Marie's trailer.

"Boxing Gym on 8th"
Boxing Gym on SE Alder St
As mentioned above, I think this is the Beaverton PAL boxing team filming.
Gym location: SE Alder St  (Thanks for the tip, OldeSaultie!)

Grimm Episode 10 Portland filming locations

Grimm Episode 10 "Organ Grinder"
On this week's episode: "Nick and Hank investigate the murder of a teenager, and the stakes are raised when two vagrant teens are abducted."
Aired: Friday, Feb. 3, 9/8c

Location highlights this week: Old Town, Chinatown

The Gorge
The episode opened with another dark, wooded forest chase, this one leading to a crime scene in a river with a waterfall backdrop.
nbc.com/grimm
I'm not sure where in the Gorge this particular waterfall is located. Is it real? Anyone recognize it?
nbc.com/grimm
Back at the police station, the river drowning location is described by Detective Griffin as "the river above Triple Falls" near Sandy, which he points out on a map:
nbc.com/grimm
Sandy, OR was also a location for filming in Episode 4, "Lonelyhearts".

Old Town / Chinatown
Most of the rest of the scenes were filmed in Old Town / Chinatown. The Grimm film crew camped out in the parking lot of 4th & Davis (in front of Davis St Tavern) during the 2nd week of November.
  • Post Office: The detectives visit a post office downtown where they learn the location of the streetgirl who sells bracelets.
  • Saturday Market area: We see various (sunny) shots of Ankeny Square and the Skidmore Fountain where the streetkids hang out.

Grimm Episode 9 Portland filming locations

Marty the Mouse - photo from BuddyTV.com
Grimm Episode 9 "Of Mouse and Man"
On this week's episode: "When a man is found dead in a dumpster, the investigation leads to a sly snake and a timid mouse."
Aired: Friday, Jan. 20, 9/8c

Bridge of the Week: The show opens with a shot of the St. Johns Bridge as a backdrop to our weekly Papyrus font quote (intended to frame each week's story).

The first crime is a murder taking place in a parking garage under a brick apartment complex. This is fictionally located at '841 SE Long St' and the sign on the building reads "Chaney Arms Apartments".
Shot from nbc.com/grimm
OregonLive reports this location as the "Wellesley Apartments on SE 15th".  Looks accurate:
Photo from GoogleMaps - 829 SE 15th Ave
A reader reports the apartment building is actually the "Melcliff Apartments" at 11th & Morrison. Hmm....
From GoogleMaps - 711 SE 11th
Mississippi
Next, the cops head over to investigate a tip at a "junkyard over on the east side". It was a matter of time before Mississippi Ave made an appearance on Grimm. It seems The ReBuilding Center (shown at right) at 3625 N. Mississippi Ave was perfectly TV-ready to play "Marty's Junkshop". Filming took place in the middle of October.

Baha'i
The investigation continues, leading the team to the "Law Office of Mason Snyder", an ambulance-chasing attorney (who is also a snake-like creature). This was filmed at the Portland Bahai Center in mid-October. (At some point later in the show, I think they referred to this location as "a building on Grand".)

Grimm Episode 6 Portland filming locations

Aired: Friday, Dec. 9, 9/8c

Grimm Episode 6 "The Three Bad Wolves" plot: "When Nick and Hank investigate the explosion of a Blutbad's home, Monroe is brought face-to-face with characters from his troubled past."

Sherwood got a little Grimm this week! According to the Beaverton Valley Times:

"TV crews filmed in Sherwood for two days in August, including shutting down parts of Southwest Main Street as well as Southwest Baker Road and Major Oak Drive off Sunset Boulevard."

They filmed the chase scene in nearby woods. The B.V.Times also reports that we may see more in the future:

"Although this is the first time that “Grimm’s” film crews have come to Sherwood, Gavin doesn’t expect it to be the last. “Sherwood has got some good things going for it,” he said. “There’s the river going through it, and farmland and forest. It has a good varied look.”"

  • Geodesic Dome House / scene of the crime - While looking for the location of the octagonal house that was burned down in the opening scene, I found this amazing but unrelated list of "Oregon Round Barns"... however, I'm still looking for the house used in this scene. (Any info? Send me a msg.)
--> Hey, an update here: Based on a tip from a reader, we suspect the geodesic dome used in this scene was a home in NE Portland on Mason St. View it on Google Maps to see for yourself.

Grimm Episode 5 Portland filming locations

Aired: Thursday, Dec. 8, 10/9c

Grimm Episode 5 "Danse Macabre" plot: "Nick and Hank's investigation of a dead high school teacher leads them to the school's outcast, Roddy. Nick realizes that there's more to Roddy than meets the eye..."

In her review today, Kristi at The Oregonian called this one "the best episode yet".  Yes...if you can handle rats, lots of rats, and half-eaten human corpses, eaten by rats.

This week's episode stumped me a little bit. Played a game of fill-in-the-blanks for awhile, but with the help of several readers & KGWNews (5/18), was able to fill in most of the locations.

  • St Johns Bridge - Seen in opening shot, and then played a prominent role as Backdrop for multiple scenes throughout.

    • This mill was also a filming location for several movies: Twilight (2008) and The Hunted (2003). Check out TwilightGirlPortland for all the details!
  • The Von Hamerlin Music Institute = a NE Portland retirement housing complex
Rosemont Court (formerly Villa St. Rose)
597 N Dekum St, Portland, OR

maps.google.com
  • Police station - same ol'
  • Nice house with a gated driveway where Nick interviews the music school kids: Thanks to a reader for the tip! This is located on SW Edgecliff Rd in the Dunthorpe neighborhood... note the lions on the gate.

My previous Grimm locations posts:
Episode 4 - Lonelyhearts
Episode 3 - BeeWare
